Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, itchy, inflammatory skin condition. Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema) is one of the most common skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis means a condition in which the amount of ceramides, or fatty acids, which prevent water from evaporating from the skin, is reduced in the skin. The skin barrier of those with atopic dermatitis does not function normally. As a result of skin dryness, an inflammatory reaction develops in the skin, which can lead to long-term itchy eczema. Children often scratch their skin until it bleeds when the itching is severe. Typical areas for children are the cheeks, limbs and folds, and for adults, the head, upper body, folds and hands. In addition to dryness, other symptoms of atopic dermatitis include dry skin, roughness, redness, and lesions.
Atopic skin is thinner than normal, so liquid can evaporate and the skin dries out easily. The acute phase is often treated by applying local corticosteroid creams. Cortisone is used for treatment in courses, as long-term use can thin the skin. If the skin becomes inflamed or the eczema worsens significantly, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
